El Classico: Madrid hold Barca to a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou

The long-awaited tie between Spanish giants cum super rivals, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, ended 1-1, as Luis Suarez’s goal that set Barcelona’s chances of winning the first leg of El Clasico was snatched away by a late equaliser from Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.

Suarez scored at the 53rd minute to put his side ahead in the game. It was Neymar’s cross that was whipped in from a free-kick that found the head of Suarez who was able to simply nod past Keilor Navas from close range.

But with just minutes remaining, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane sent in Ramos into attack, perhaps in a desperate bid to snatch an unlikely away draw and the substitution paid off when Modric free-kick was headed by him to past Marc-André ter Stegen.

Currently, however, Real Madrid remains at the top of the league table with 34points, while Barcelona is placed second with 28points.

Sen Sani Vs Gov El'eufai fight gets messier as families are dragged in

The squabble between Senator Shehu Sani and Governor Nasir El’rufai of Kadina State seems to be getting messier as they have dragged in their families.

This is as Senator Sani, has cried out over what he said has been different attacks targeted at him and his family members.

He also said that Governor El’rufai, should be held responsible should anything happen to him.

The lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, alleged that gunmen attacked his constituency office on
Saturday.

A post on the lawmaker’s Facebook page on Saturday read: “Some few minutes ago, I received a report that some heavily armed
thugs raided and attacked my constituency office located at Stadium Roundabout by Constitution Road Kaduna. They unleashed terror on my social media team, who were meeting in the office. They vandalised the
office in their violent act.

“We have the lead and the information that thugs were fully recruited and paid by political appointees of Governor Nasiru el-Rufai. We have the names of the political appointees and we have the names of those
they are funding. Right now, their details have been given to the DSS and the police for investigation.

“Two days ago, attempt to burn down my family house in Alkalawa Road,Tudun Wada, Kaduna, by sponsored thugs was thwarted by vigilant residents and neighbours, which led to the brief deployment of policemen in the area.

“I wish to state it categorically clear that I hold Governor Nasiru el-Rufai personally responsible for whatever happens to me or any of my family members or supporters. After the use of financial inducement
on APC excos in the state to silence Shehu Sani in the name of suspension, which never worked, they have now taken the road of violence.

“The governor of the state or his desperate political appointees should know that we can NEVER ever be silenced, cowered or
intimidated. I call on my supporters NEVER to take the road of violence or retaliation. We are men of ideas and peace. Those who take to the road of violence have no place in a democratic society.”

The senator, who recently was suspended by the State All Progressives Congress (APC), had accused the governor of masterminding his suspension and described him with different unpalatable words.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have defeated the Lionesses of Cameroon one goal to nothing in the final showdown of the African Women Cup of Nations on Saturday at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Omnisports Stadium in Yaoundé, to win the African women title for the 8th time.

The Falcons, who also won in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2014, confirmed their dominance in Africa as they deprived the hosts Cameroon of claiming the trophy on home soil.

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Nigeria’s Super Falcons on their victory over the senior female football team of Cameroon on Saturday at the final game of the women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Yaounde.

The President, who described the hard-earned victory over the Indomitable Lionesses as “very sweet and well-deserved,” particularly commends the Nigerian women for their “indomitable spirit, resilience and team work” which spurred them to victory in spite of a vociferous home crowd.

In a statement by his special adviser media, Femi Adesina, President Buhari noted that the Nigerian team achieved “this feat of being African champions for the 8th time,” a development he says has lifted the spirits of sports-loving Nigerians.

“He enjoins other Nigerian sports men and women to emulate the exemplary attitude of the Super Falcons who placed the interest of the nation above personal interests, while assuring that the Federal Government will not relent in doing its best to promote sports within available resources.

“The President also salutes the technical competence of the coaching crew, which enabled the Nigerian players to overcome their hard-fighting opponents throughout the competition” Adesina said.

Nigeria won the 2016 women’s Africa Cup of Nations for an eighth time after a 1-0 win over hosts Cameroon in front of a capacity 40,000 crowd in Yaounde.

A late goal from Desire Oparanozie was enough for Nigeria to retain the trophy they won in Namibia two years ago.

The Super Falcons have dominated this competition, winning all but two of the ten editions played so far.

In a repeat of the 2014 final, Cameroon finished as runners-up again despite enjoying massive home support.

In front of Cameroon president Paul Biya, the hosts had the best of the first half, with a number of chances for Aboudi Onguene, but the Indomitable Lionesses failed to make the most of their opportunities.

In the second half, Oparanozie, who also scored Nigeria’s winner against South Africa in their semi-final, hit the decisive goal again when she broke the deadlock seven minutes from time.

She followed through on a pass from the tournament’s leading scorer Asisat Oshoala to give her team the trophy.

The champions went ahead through Luis Suarez, but were punished for failure to close out the game and the six-point difference stays the same as Real remain unbeaten

The final match was played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Omnisports Stadium in Yaoundé, a forty thousand capacity stadium.

Meanwhile, the coach of the Super Falcons, Flowrence Omagbemi has made history as the first person to win the AWCON as a player and a coach.
