The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the FCT Classic which teed off on Friday climaxed with the final round on Sunday.

It was the season opening event of the 2017 West Africa Golf Tour (WAGT) and featured professional golfers from Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Zimbabwe.

tournament also marked the first anniversary of the tour which was launched in February 2016 in Abuja.

Overnight leader Nlareb, having an 11-shot lead going into the last round, played a very conservative round making only two birdies in his score of 76 to give him a total of 221 (+5).

Nlareb who was the winner of the 2016 Gabon Open was closely followed by Victor Mapwanya from Zimbabwe who made a valiant effort to close the gap but only finished second.

Mapwanya played some attacking golf, shooting a very credible one under par 71 which included 3 birdies and 2 drop shots to reduce the deficit to 6 shots.

Cameroon’s Nji Priestly shot a third round 73 to finish in third position.

For almost two years, the United States has backed—with weapons, logistics and political support—a Saudi-led war in Yemen that has left over 10,000 dead, 40,000 wounded, 2.5 million internally displaced, 2.2 million children suffering from malnutrition and over 90 percent of civilians in need of humanitarian aid. A recent UN report on the humanitarian crisis and near-famine conditions in Yemen (that encompassed South Sudan, Nigeria and Somalia as well) has led to a rare instance of Western media taking notice of the war and its catastrophic effect. But missing from most of these reports is the role of the United States and its ally Saudi Arabia—whose two-year-long siege and bombing have left the country in ruins. A Daily News editorial (“USA for Africa (and Yemen),” 2/27/17) called on readers to give to aid organizations helping to alleviate the crisis, but neglected to mention the US/Saudi role in the humanitarian disaster the Daily News itself insisted was “caused by acts of man rather than God.” Which men were those? The Daily News doesn’t say. This AP report (2/21/17) notes that “in Yemen’s conflict, nearly half a million children have ‘severe acute malnutrition'”–but it doesn’t mention the ...

by Jessica Huseman After arguing for nearly six years that Texas’ voter ID law intentionally discriminated against minorities, the U.S. Department of Justice has informed the other plaintiffs in the case it has abandoned that position. The decision comes one day before the DOJ and the other plaintiffs were scheduled to make their latest arguments against the ID law. “I think it is clearly a retreat from voting rights,” said Danielle Lang, deputy director of voting rights for The Campaign Legal Center, which represents plaintiffs in the case. She said her organization has been “raising alarm bells” about new Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ willingness to protect voting rights since he was nominated. Still, today’s decision disturbed her. “The DOJ reviewed the evidence and found that Texas [passed this law] on purpose to harm minority voters,” she said. “To turn their back on that is something I’m going to reserve my ability to be outraged about.” The DOJ declined comment. There is no indication that the DOJ plans to withdraw its argument that the Texas law was discriminatory in its effects. Texas’ voter ID law was passed in 2011, but put on hold after the Justice Department intervened. When the ...
