No fewer than eight people were allegedly killed as scores of structures including a house and eatery were burnt to ashes following alleged bid of filthy words against the Prophet Muhammad by a student of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic Talata Mafara of Zamfara state yesterday.
According to an eyewitness account that pleaded anonymity said, the embattled student allegedly attacked the personality of the Holy Prophet in response to a warring student who was reported to have insulted him while in hot argument over issues pertaining Nigeria’s poor performance during just concluded Olympic games in Brazil.
“We were at the eatery when we saw students running helter skelter towards every direction, the next moment was a student crying for help who later, was said to have insulted the Holy Prophet of Islam, the reason he was instantly attacked by angry students,” an eye witness alleged.
The attention of the angry students was said to have been redirected to a man who symphasised with the embattled student and drove him away for safety and medical attention in his vehicle.
The man was pursued but could not be traced after which a group of unidentified people proceeded to his house where they locked eight of his family members up and set the house ablaze, all the remains of the burnt household were buried yesterday according to the Islamic rites, the sad occasion which even attended by the State Governor himself.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state Command, DSP Shehu Muhammad, a 12 hour curfew has been imposed across the affected Talata Mafara local government to ensure restoration of law and order for peace to continue to reign.
