Headies 2016: Kiss Daniel, ILLBliss win big; Tekno disqualified

The Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel and Suites came alive for the 11th edition of the annual hip hop awards staged to hounour the brightest and best in the music industry to the delight of industry watchers and players.

Hours before the event was staged,Triple MMMG’s Tekno was disqualified by the organisers in what seemed like the biggest controvert that nas played out at the awards ceremony in the second year running following the back and forth between Olamide and Don Jazzy that nearly rocked the last edition staged in January this year.

According to the organizers, Tekno’s nomination was withdrawn after he failed to participate in any of the pre-award activities including photo shoots and interviews- a normal ritual for nominees in the Next Rated category in which he was nominated for.

The awards ceremony was graced by the cream of the entertainment industry also present was the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick who came to show solidarity with the entertainment industry like he has always done in the past.

One of the major low points of the event which saw the likes of Uti Nwachukwu, Lynnxx, Essence, KSB, DJ Waxxy and Eva Alordiah rock the red carpet with their unique garbs, was the fact that some of the major nominees such as Olamide, Patoranking, Bez, Clarence Peters and ILLBliss were not present at the occasion to receive their awards.

The Headies stage was lit up with performances from Humblesmith, Daddy Showkey, Ras Kimono, Aramide, 2face, Jazzman, Daddy Showkey and an unexpected performance by the trio of Tony Tetuila, Eedris Abdulkareem and Eddy Remedy, of the remedies fame.

Speaking after notching his second award on the night, Dare Art-Alade said; ” It’s amazing to emerge winner in two categories tonight at a time when I am celebrating 20-years in the music industry. Thanks to those who voted for me and to those who didn’t, God is watching you”.

The awards ceremony which seeks to reward the best contemporary hip hop and R&B artists in the land also witnessed the likes of Mai Atafo, Serah Ofili, DJ Obi, Adunni Ade, Uti Nwachukwu, Stalla Monye and JJC handing awards to deserving winners on the night.
