It's time to end this trial, Saraki's lawyer pleads with CCT

Council to Senate President Bukola Saraki, Kanu Agabi, on Wednesday told the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) Chairman, Danladi Umar, that his client is unhappy with the ongoing trial at the tribunal.

He told Umar that his earnest prayer is that the matter before the tribunal and all its worries end this year in peace.

“Our prayer this year is that you free us from all these. We are not happy to be here. It is my fervent prayer that this matter will end in peace,” Agabi told Umar.

Agabi’s statement came as a snapped response to the CCT chairman, who while welcoming the counsels for both the prosecution and the defence upon the resumption of the Senate President’s false asset declaration trial on Wednesday said, “I hope 2017 proceedings would be rancour free, I believe everyone is happy to be back at the tribunal.”

Senate President Saraki is accused by the Federal Government of making a false asset declaration. He has been standing trial at the CCT on a 16-count charge relating to the accusation.

The trial which on several occasions dominated news headlines in 2016, has however dragged on into 2017.

Umar had adjourned proceedings on the matter to January 11, 2017, when it came up on November 8 2016.
