Iwobi, Iheanacho fire Eagles to victory in Zambia

Arsenal wonder kid Alex Iwobi and Manchester City starlet Kelechi Iheanacho scored two beautiful goals as the Super Eagles secured a 2-1 win to begin their 2018 World Cup qualifier on a brighter note.

Iwobi opened the scoring for the Super Eagles in the 32nd minute, firing into the bottom corner following a knockback to net his first international goal.

Iheanacho then doubled Nigeria’s lead 10 minutes later as he latched onto a through ball before rounding the keeper and slotting home.

Collins Mbesuma pulled one back for Zambia in the 71st minute, but the visitors were able to hang on to their lead and record a victory in their Group B opener.

Playing at a capacity filled stadium, Iwobi gave Nigeria the lead as Iheanacho scored the second to take his international tally to four in six games, to sit alongside his astonishing record of 17 goals in 42 appearances for the Blues.

Iheanacho made a great run to latch on to a clever short pass from former West Brom striker Brown Ideye before smartly rounding goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene and then lashing the ball into the net from an angle despite three defenders getting back to cover the line.

That made it 2-0 to Nigeria just before half time, and they held on for the victory despite Zambia pulling one back with 20 minutes left.

Iheanacho is expected to return to City early this week, as the Eagles have no more games until the November international break, when they have a crunch home clash with Algeria.
