Mourinho cautions fans and players ahead of Liverpool tie

Manager Jose Mourinho has admonished Manchester United players and fans ahead of Sundays’ clash with Liverpool, saying they ‘must do better’.

The Portuguese said this while lamenting over the poor start of the Red Devils in their EFL Cup semi-final first leg match against Hull City on Tuesday – a game that later ended 2-0 in the Reds’ favour.

The first 45 minutes ended goalless, after which goals from Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini in the 56th and 87th minute respectively gave the hosts the deserved win. But Mourinho was unhappy with his players’ performance, as well as the support from the Old Trafford crowd.

“I think in the first half, they have to do better, I have to do better, the fans have to do better,” Mourinho told BT Sport.

“In the second half, everyone improved just a little bit.

“Sunday [against Liverpool], the players need to do better, I need to do better, the fans need to do better.”

The win against Hull on Tuesday night has made it nine consecutive victories for United in all competitions.

The other EFL semi-final first leg tie will be played on Wednesday between Southampton FC and Liverpool FC.

And this weekend, Mourinho’s men, as they move back to the Premier League, will take on Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Sunday. A win for United could take them into the top five.
