Reps begin consideration of 2017 budget Tuesday

The House of RepresentativesBy Umar Muhammad Puma

In their bid to keep to its promise to Nigerians on the early passage of the 2017 appropriation bill, the House of Representatives has commenced the distribution of details of this year’s budget to members, preparatory to its consideration on Tuesday next week.
In a letter signed by Chairman, House committee on Appropriations, Rep Mustapha Bala Dawaki (APC Kano), and read to members at plenary by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, each of the 360 legislators in the lower legislative chamber is to obtain a copy of the details through his or her aides.
Bala urged members to study the appropriation act, presented to the joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 14 last year, to acquaint themselves with the contents.
The House is expected to debate on the general principles of the appropriation act on the floor of the House next week Tuesday. In his welcome address at a resumed sitting of the House on Tuesday, Dogara had assured that the legislature would be more thorough this year in considering and approving the 2017 budget proposals to avoid the padding controversies that trailed last year’s budget.
