Samsung leader appears before S. Korean prosecutors

Jay Y. Lee, the Samsung Group leader appeared before special prosecutors in South Korea for questioning in connection with ongoing graft probe involving President Park Geun-hye and her friend Choi Soon-sil.

When the Samsung leader arrived the prosecutors office in a black Korean-made Ssangyong sedan, he was greeted by protesters holding signs calling for his arrest and accusing him of being the president’s accomplice.

While addressing a host of pressmen who accosted him at the premises, Lee said; “I am very sorry to the South Korean people for not showing a better side”.

According to Lee Kyu-chul, spokesman for the special prosecution team, Lee was summoned over suspicions including bribery.

Reports say prosecutors in South Korea have been checking whether Samsung’s support for a business and foundations backed by Park’s friend, Choi Soon-sil was connected to a 2015 decision by the National Pension Service to back a controversial merger of two Samsung Group affiliates.

Ms Park is accused of giving Ms Choi inappropriate access to government policy-making and decisions.
Park has since acknowledged that she committed lapses, and apologised twice on national television but a probe into her activities are still ongoing.
