2 Men Get 18 Months Jail Term Each For Theft, Receiving Stolen Property

A Mararaba Upper Area Court in Nasarawa State, on Tuesday sentenced two men, Paul Abdul, 21, and Yakubu Abdulmuminu, 20, to 18 months imprisonment each for theft and receiving stolen property.

The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, said that he jailed the convicts based on evidence before the court and their guilty plea.

Shekarau, however, gave the convicts, Abdul, and Abdulmuminu, to pay option of fine of  N28,000 and N10,000 respectively .

He ordered the convicts to jointly pay N40, 000 to the nominal complainant, as cost of prosecuting the case.

The convicts, who reside at Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, were arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on trespass, theft and receiving stolen property.

They admitted committing the offences and pleaded for mercy.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Hamen Donald, had told the court that the convicts committed the offences on Feb. 19, at about 9:a.m.

“Abdul, the first defendant trespassed into the house of one Ekum Etim of same address, and stole his cell phone, valued at N37, 500.

“He later sold the said phone to the second defendant, Abdulmuminu  for N15,000,” Donald said.

According to the prosecutor, the offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 287 and 317 of the Penal Code Law.
