The Federal Government of Nigeria has said Nigeria is set to make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to promote the Country’s Information Communication Technology, (ICT), global village Inclusion and a vision aimed at accelerating the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The Minister of Communication, Dr. Adebayo Shittu who disclose this today at a press briefing marking the 2018 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day in Abuja said with the speed and advancement in technology globally, Nigeria Government will is poised to engaging the use of AI while supporting stakeholders in the Nigeria ICT ecosystem to create and strengthen a national AI ecosystem for sustainable development.
Similarly, Adebayo while reiterating the government commitment to efficiency of the AI said ‘ government will engage in many crucial conversations around managing and exploring AI by bringing industry leaders and academic experts to the forefront by identifying priority areas such as Connectivity, Digital Inclusion, Innovation and Policy while providing universal digital access and benefits to Nigerians.
Also Adebayo noted that in a bid to closing communication gaps in Nigeria said ‘the Ministry of Communication is committed to increase broadband penetration to 30% and accelerate telephone conversation penetration especially in the rural areas while connecting rural communities to economic opportunities through improved infrastructure including ICT, which will evidently help the people contribute and benefit from the outcomes of ICT strategic roadmap’.
Adebayo who said that the Government will include artificial intelligence in coding system in the country’s educational system however charged Parents to allow their children and wards to take coding classes seriously by also buying them educational toys that can contribute to the spirit of invention and creativity in them.
“ Don’t throw away those old or damaged appliances in your houses, instead use them to enhance the creativity and ingenuity in the children” he advised.
