Federal Government has been called upon to invest more on the nation’s research and development to increase agricultural productivity.
Tola Faseru, National President of the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) made the call while speaking with Daily Independent, stressing that a country that does not regard research and development as important is a failed country.
“A lot of money should be put into research. A country that does not regard research and development as important is a failed country; it will always be a consuming country without producing anything because what I learnt in my simple business is that when you want a major development, you start first of all from the research room.”
He added that when the research room is in comatose the country can only result to buying everything from abroad, stressing that when we don’t engage ourselves to research like other countries do, our productivity will be low and our technology will be at the low end and industrialization will be next to nothing.
Speaking further, he said that some of the agricultural institutes are not in good shape and must be revitalised urgently.
“We need to change things, I also said that for us we want our own distinct Cashew Research Institute because as we speak now Cocoa Research Institute is the one that also has mandate for cashew, for kolanut and some other commodities and we are saying we need to be serious, let us set up research institute for this. These are the major commodities that can change the game for the economy.
“With government focusing on research and development putting it in the right place, then we can say we started something and we are going in the direction of production, export and we can now raise our head high among the committee of nations, because our productivity will be much better.
Adding, “We have to keep researching to see how each hectare of land can give the biggest volume or the biggest quantity that is what other countries are doing. Every day, they are scaling up production by research and development, having commodities with lower gestation periods and high yield seedlings,” he added.
