Makurdi – Fulani herdsmen again struck in Guma Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue state on Tuesday, this time killing three persons in two separate attacks.

The herdsmen also shot Orihyev Nyaga, who narrowly escaped being killed by his assailants.

While two of the victims were shot and killed on their way back from a village market in Yelwata, the third, a Catechist, Christopher Umenger, was shot on his way to morning mass at RCM Church, Tse-Origbo, all in Guma LGA of the state.

The Rev. Father in charge of the Parish, Moses Iorapuu, who confirmed the incident, did not however give further details on the incident.

It would be recalled that herdsmen had earlier killed two policemen at Tse-Origbo in the early hours of Monday.

INDEPENDENT also gathered that the two other victims that lost their lives in Yelwata are two blood brothers; Aondowase Uma and Ahanbee Uma.

INDEPENDENT further gathered that they were ambushed and killed by the herdsmen while returning from a market in Yelwata, a border town between Benue and Nasarawa state.

The victims who were on motorbike, had run into a roadblock set by the herdsmen at about 8pm on Tuesday.

Orihyev Nyaga, who survived the attack, explained that he was shot on the left hand, while returning from the market on a motorcycle when he ran into a roadblock mounted by the herdsmen.

The herdsmen, he further explained, had attempted to cut him with a machete but he escaped before he was shot in the hand.

According to him, he then abandoned his bike and ran into the bush where he escaped and went back to the market and raised an alarm.

INDEPENDENT also learnt that after the alarm was raised, the dead bodies were recovered by youths who have handed over the corpses to the Police at Yelwata.

It was also gathered that the bodies of the victims have already been deposited at a morgue.

Locals said that but for the alarm raised, more deaths may have been recorded from the attack.
