Abuja – Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Senate President, has acknowledged the INDEPENDENT National Legislator of 2017 Award given to him by Independent Newspapers Limited (INL).
Senator Ekweremadu noted that the award was, for him, recognition of his contribution to public service.
He said he was highly honoured by the award, particularly because it had come from a reputable organisation.
“I want to thank you for this honour. For us, we do our work believing that public service is an institution where total commitment is expected and that’s what we’ve been giving to it.
“We do our work with conscience, looking to have a place in history, that when we leave, we would leave a mark behind by adding value to the society.
“So, when we get this type of recognition as a bonus for what we do, especially from a credible organisation like yours we receive it with joy knowing that our efforts are actually being noticed and appreciated.
“So I want to say thank you for this recognition, and it is well received,” he said.
The management of INL, led by the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief, Ade Ogidan, presented a letter of the award to the Deputy Senate President on Tuesday.
The award ceremony comes up on Saturday at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The INDEPENDENT team which visited Senator Ekweremadu included the Editorial Board Chairman, Donatus Duru, and the Head of Northern Operations, Onche Odey.
Ogidan, Managing Director, in his short speech at the event, disclosed that the choice of Senator Ekweremadu for the award was the outcome of a painstaking selection process devoid of any sentiment but pure consideration of merit.
He said: “In nominating you, the selection committee considered the pragmatism, commitment, and courage exhibited by you in the nation’s red chambers as Deputy President of the Senate.
“Worthy of note is the fact that you have brought your wealth of experience in governance at all levels, especially as a distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic, to bear on your service to the country.
“For instance, the amendment of the 1999 constitution received failure until you took over the processes in 2007.
“You piloted the first, second, and third alteration of the constitution in that sixth Assembly. We are proud of the roles you’ve played in the ECOWAS parliament.
“You have been able to effectively balance the situation within the polity.
“We’ve noted the maturity with which you played your own brand of politics, which is politics without bitterness.
“We’ve noted that you have actually bridged the gap between the two major political parties in the country.
“As a result of your resourcefulness, we are today proud of the Senate we have.
“And we, therefore, wish to present to you, a formal letter nominating you as the National Legislator for the Year 2017.”
