Awka – Following the persistent killings by the Fulani cattle breeders in some part of the country, especially Benue, Taraba and Pleatau states, Nigerian governors have been urged to study and replicate their counterpart in Anambra State, Willie Obiano, whose proactive security measures have checked excesses of the herdsmen in the state.
Speaking to journalists in Awka on Tuesday, John Okoli Akirika, a legal practitioner, said the measures by Obiano, if replicated, would stop hostilities between herdsmen and their host communities and ensure harmonious co- existence in the entire country.
Akirika, former commissioner for lands and housing in the state, observed that Obiano’s insistence that herdsmen must pay compensation to farmers for crops destroyed by their cattle while famers should equally pay for any harm done to the cattle have provided necessary checks and balances for both sides.
He explained that this was in line with the constitutional responsibility of the governor to protect lives and property and also in conformity with the biblical injunction that anyone who allows his animal to graze on other people’s farm should pay restitution.
