Nigeria Senate Accuses Total Of Flouting Local Content Law In Petroleum Sector

Senate Committee on Local Content headed by Senator Solomon Olamilekan, in line with its directive that representatives of Total Exploration Company Nigeria and some key players in Nigeria’s oil industry should appear before it’s investigative committee has accused Total Exploration Company of Nigeria of flouting Local Content Law of Nigeria.

The Senate Committee on Local Content said that Total is consciously creating conditions difficult for local contractors to own vessels and as such operate actively in the country’s oil and gas industry.

Narrating the ordeals of indigenous contractors, Bassey Offiong, the legal counsel representing the Indigenous Vessel Owners Association called on the Senate to address the grey areas in the procurement process as it relates to operational relationships between the indigenous contactors and the multinational oil and Gas Company.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local Content, Senator Solomon Olamilekan accused the multinational Oil and Gas Company of manipulating the bidding process against the indigenous contractors. The lawmaker also said that Total manipulated the bidding process to favour a selected group and companies.

The Oil Company which was represented by its Executive Director, Corporate Services, Abiodun Afolabi says “the multinational corporation has not acted in any way that contravenes the laws of the country”. He said as a matter of operational standards, the company abides by the laws of the land as it relates to Local Content.

The Group General Manager (GGM) of the National Petroleum Investment Management Services NAPIMS, a subsidiary of the NNPC Roland Ewubare in his own submission promised that his agency will look into the issues raised by the Senate Committee in a view to bring a lasting solution to the allegations raised by the local contractors in the oil industry.
