NNPC GMD Mr. Maikanti Baru Blames The Media For Fuel Scarcity

The Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, Mr. Maikanti Baru has blamed social media and what he termed fake news for the fuel scarcity that caused untold hardship on countless Nigeria, especially during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Responding during the Senate Committee investigating the immediate and remote causes of the scarcity, Mr Baru claimed that the rumour of scarcity peddled on the media, especially social media led to hoarding and panic-buying which eventually caused the scarcity.

“News in the media, especially social media was one of the reasons why some marketers were hoarding the products. We tackled that by re-assuring Nigerians that there is enough of the product.”

It would be recalled that despite assurances by the leadership of NNPC on availability of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called Fuel in November 2017, Nigerians woke to the reality that the product was not only scarce but very expensive.  This disrupted movement of travelers during the Christmas and New Year celebration.

The scarcity prompted a probe by the Nigeria Senate aimed at uncovering the immediate and remote causes of the scarcity.
