Lagos – The National Industrial Court (NIC), Lagos on Wednesday witnessed pandemonium as fighting broke out among tricycle operators who instituted a suit before the Court.
It was gathered that what transpired in the Court room does not go well with the claimants, and they laid ambush on the defendants as they were stepping out of the Court gate, attacked them with stones while some were stabbed with broken bottles.
It took the intervention of the Court Chief Security Officer that prevented them from entering the Court premises.
The aggrieved tricyclists were heard shouting in Pidgin English: “If they born you well, come out of the gate.”
Those who were fatally injured were identified as Kazeem Okanlawon, Segun Ogundare, Ikotun Abayomi, Kehinde Adeniran and Babatunde Omobisi.
They were given first aid treatment at the NIC Clinic and subsequently reported the matter at the Ikoyi Divisional Police Station.
Later, the suspected tricyclists who snatched and vandalised cars, were later returned to the Court premises. One of the injured persons was brought to the Court soaked in blood with torn clothes before he was taken to the nearby hospital.
It was gathered they instituted the suit against; Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Minister for Labour and Employment, Registrar of Trade Unions, Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria, Comrade Agustine Apeh, Attorney General of Lagos State, Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State as first to eight defendant respectively.
They are reported to be asking the Court in the suit delineated NICN/LA/504/2016, to nullify the registration of the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria. The claimants also want court to order (seventh and eight defendant), Attorney General of Lagos State and Commissioner for Transport, Lagos State to stop recognising the association.
The claimant, Incorporated Trustees of Tricycle Owners & Operators Association of Nigeria with its officers, Comrade Joseph Odusanya, Alhaji Ganiyu Dauda and Alhaji Shakirudeen Arowoye as first to the fourth claimant.
The Court adjourned the matter till March 20, 2018 for further hearing.
