Peruvian Police on Wednesday detained the mayor of a Lima neighbourhood on charges of heading a criminal gang, the official Andina news agency reported.
The criminal gang was dedicated to the illegal acquisition and sale of land.
Santa Rosa Mayor Carlos Arce was arrested along with 30 other suspected members of the gang known as “The Damned of Santa Rosa.’’
The detainees included three municipal officials, a judge and two police officers.
More than 800 police officers and 55 prosecutors participated in the early morning raids.
The gang is suspected of fraudulently acquiring more than 800,000 square metres of land for illegal business operations through which it earned about 6 million dollars, said Interior Minister Vicente Romero, according to Andina.
Charges against the gang members also include extortion, illegal possession of firearms and the use of hitmen.
