UPDATED: House of Reps to recall Jibrin

OrderPaperToday – The House of Representatives is set to recall suspended member, Abdulmumini Jibril )APC, Kano)
This move follows the receipt of a letter of apology from the lawmaker who has been left in the cold for over 180 legislative days for which he was suspended by his colleagues.
In reading the letter of apology, the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, said with the apology, the lawmaker has met all conditions required for him to be admitted back into the House.

Mr. Abdulmumin was suspended in September 2016 for 180 legislative days and, in order to gain acceptance back into the House, he was asked to apologise at the end of his suspension.

Additionally, his salaries and allowances were halted and he was banned from the premises of National Assembly.

The motion that led to his suspension was sponsored by Mr. Emmanuel Orker-Jev (APC, Benue) who accused Jibrin of a breach of privilege.

The matter was subsequently referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges headed by Mr. Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta). However, the lawmaker boycotted the panel twice, consecutively.

Reacting to the issue, Mr. Alhassan Ado Doguwa (APC, Kano) applauded the decision of the House for accepting Mr. Abdulmumin’s apology.

He said: “I want to thank Mr. Speaker, the leadership and the entire House of Reps for accepting one of our own to reunite and I think this is not just a courtesy accorded to him but a courtesy accorded to the constituency and it is also a courtesy accorded to the governor and the people of Kano State. I want to, on behalf of the people of my State, thank the entire House, especially the Speaker.”

Speaking on lessons learnt, the Kano-born lawmaker said all parties have learnt their lessons.

“Lessons were learnt from by both parties, the leadership and the victim. Lessons on the part of leadership and lessons on the part of members.”

Interestingly, the letter written by Mr. Abdulmumin was not read on the floor; rather, the Speaker flaunted a paper with a House of House of Representatives letterhead, which he said was an apology letter from the embattled lawmaker.
