Youth body moves to rescue Almajirai

From EDDY OCHIGBO, Kaduna

The Northern Youth Council (NYC) has called on politicians to imbibe the culture of promoting human capital development in the country, to tackle youth unemployment and youth restiveness in the country.

President of the council, Mallam Isa Abubakar, who made the call during the investiture of the Lere Local Government Council boss, Honorable Abubakar Buba as an icon of human development at the Arewa House, Kaduna, in recognition of his unwavering determination to positively touch the lives of the good people of the local government, reasoned that the nation cannot make any meaningful progress without raising the standard of living of the citizenry.

While expressing concern over millions of out of school children roaming the streets in Northern Nigeria under the guise of the almajirai system, Abubakar hailed the Sokoto Catholic Diocese under the leadership of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah for its proposal to rehabilitate them. “Unfortunately, Bishop Kukah’s gesture didn’t go down well with a few individuals who may have misconstrued his position on the matter. I believe that Kukah means well and shouldn’t be condemned for saying what he said. Rather we should all come together to give the lives of our less-privileged children a meaning”, he explained.

“We need to spread the news of the need to cater for almajiris under the slogan of ‘one man one almajiri because with such a step, we would have better and safer society where we would all exude love and confidence, he stated.

The NYC President also expressed serious concern over the alarming rate of poverty and deprivation among the rural and urban poor in the country and gave kudos to those he described as few and exceptional leaders – whom he said would stop at nothing to improve and enhance the standard of living of Nigerian people.

One of such individuals who put the people first in the scheme of things, he revealed, is the Chairman Lere Local Government Council, Honorable Abubakar Buba, earning him the rare recognition by the Northern Youth Council as an icon of human development.

“The Northern Youth Council is pleased to identify with Alhaji Abubakar Buba for his strong commitment to uplift the standard of living of the less-privileged not only in Lere local government area but in Kaduna state as a whole. With every sense of responsibility, I make bold to say that his conferment with the Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna Platinum Excellence Leadership Award as an icon of human development, is appropriate and well-deserved”, the president maintained, assuring that Buba’s investiture into the NYC hall of fame would no doubt go along way in encouraging him to attain more milestones in human capital development.

Responding, the Local Government boss, Alhaji Abubakar Buba thanked the Northern Youth Council for the recognition, pledging that the unexpected award would remain a great source of inspiration and encouragement for him to stand for good governance by serving the people conscientiously at all times.

“My fellow Northern brothers and sisters, can we say today that as leaders in our various endeavors we have kept alive the ideals, values and principles the sage, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the  Sardauna of Sokoto, stood for?”, the chairman queried, adding that as northerners, directly or indirectly, we all have benefited from the legacies of Sardauna and today, can we beat our chests and say we are putting on ground legacies for the benefit of posterity, especially in the area of human capital development?
