President Buhari initiates moves for orderly transition in Gambia

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has activated a process of ensuring orderly transition of power in The Gambia, in discharge of his mandate as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) mediator in the disputed poll between President elect, Adama Barrow and the incumbent Yahya Jammeh. President Jammeh had rejected the result of result of the Presidential election held on December 1, 2016 which he lost and had congratulated the President elect before backing off few days later to reject the outcome of the poll. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called Adama Barrow, the President-elect of Gambia, to congratulate him on his electoral victory and to reiterate the commitment of the UN to a peaceful, timely, and orderly transfer of power. In a readout of the phone call issued by his spokesperson, Mr Stephane Dujarric, Ban, said the UN welcomed and fully supported the decision of ECOWAS on Dec. 17, to support the safety of the president-elect.
