Gabon: More violence looms as opposition leader rejects results

Gabonese opposition leader Jean Ping has declared himself as the rightful winner of the last elections which saw the re-election of incumbent President Ali Bongo in disputed votes.

“The whole world knows today who the president of the Republic of Gabon is. It’s me, Jean Ping,” he told a news conference.

“Each time the Gabonese people have chosen their president, the dark forces are always gathered to place he who was not chosen as head of state. Together we have decided that this time things, however, will be different”, he added.

His comments are expected to spark up more unrest after days of sporadic violence which has seen the arrest of 1,100 rioters by police over violence which erupted in the capital of Libreville.
