Ughelli – Peregbakumo Oyawerikumo alias Karowei, notorious Niger Delta militant has allegedly been killed by operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) codenamed Operation Delta Safe barely 24 hours after he surrendered himself on Thursday.
Sources who confided on Saturday INDEPENDENT revealed that the militant leader was ‘wasted’ by soldiers last night in an alleged ‘stage managed’ operation, adding that the notorious militant leader was under pressure from some undisclosed Ijaw leaders to surrender himself to JTF operatives with a promise that they would work out amnesty for him which made him to turn himself in on Thursday morning at Ogobagbene community.
The source added that he was extra-judicially killed in the night of same day apparently because his confessional statement would be counter-productive to the operations of the taskforce.
But coordinator of the Joint Media Campaign Centre of the JTF, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi who gave details of what led to his death said that the ruminants of Karowei who was in JTF custody ambushed troops when the kingpin was being led to his camp to recover his arms and ammunitions.
The JTF spokesman revealed that in an ensuing confrontation, Karowei alongside several of his lieutenants were killed due to superior firepower, resilience and gallantry of troops.
“After his arrest, Mr. Karowei confessed to several criminal acts and led troops to his camp to recover the cache of arms and ammunitions in his possession as well as to persuade other members of his gang to surrender.
