Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO) Chairman, Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe on Friday described as unacceptable, the country’s obnoxious social norms, political exclusion and economic lopsidedness which distaste the presence and voice of women in public life.
Speaking at LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award in Benin City, Ehigiamusoe lamented that cultural practices in many African countries have often rendered women invisible and subservient to their male counterparts.
The LAPO Founder, who decried the difficulty faced by women to participate in political and economic activities in a bid to live a comfortable and productive life said, “the average Nigerian woman is challenged with issues of violence, disinheritance, forced marriage, wife inheritance, harsh widowhood practices, sexual harassment, rape and human trafficking among others.
Ehigiamusoe who was represented by Member Board of LAPO, Eddy Aghimien, said women engagement in the informal sector and farming which sustain the economy and society are unrecognised.
According to him, “within this framework of impossibilities and limitations set by social structures and cultures, women have created personal lives worth emulating and are emerging as influential forces in their chosen careers, with keen interest in leadership and decision making.”
While enumerating some of the achievements of LAPO, particularly its contribution to the advancement of women, Ehigiamusoe said, “the organisation has witnessed women with poor socio-economic and health status transform to highly motivated women with more control over their lives, and those of their children while contributing their quota to national growth and development.”
LAPO Outstanding Women Leadership Award, he said, was instituted in 2013 specifically to recognise and celebrate Nigerian women who have distinguished themselves and recorded outstanding successes in their business, professional and public lives.
