NMC To Develop Human Capacity In Statistics

In its effort to develop appropriate initiatives and resources of international standing for the reawaking and sustaining of interest in the Mathematical Sciences, the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) is to assist in human capacity building in statistics and the mathematical sciences.

The Director and Chief Executive of the Centre, Prof Stephen Onah disclosed this at the closing ceremony of a one- week workshop in Computer Driven Data Analysis in Abuja.

A statement by the Head, Information, NMC, Onyekachi Njoku,  quoted the chief executive saying that the workshop was organised in the centre’s effort to train and equip higher level personnel in academics and industry in both the public and private sectors stated that data analysis helps in national planning and development.


He stressed that the workshop provided the participants with the opportunity to ascertain ways to translate and analyze data for national development.

Onah gave the assurance that through the development of appropriate manpower, the general poor perception and the fear of students for mathematics and the mathematical sciences would be a thing of the past.

The coordinator of Statistics Programme of the centre, Prof Funmilayo Saporu pointed out that the training affords the participants the rare opportunity to understand how to generate, process and analyse data.

He said that the application of the knowledge gained from the workshop will assist to achieve national set goals. Participants were drawn from ministries, departments and agencies like Nigerian Customs Service, Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Universities etc.
