Ondo poll: SDP set to take advantage of PDP, APC crisis

Governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) and former Minister of state for power, Dr. Olu Agunloye, has said that his party will profit greatly from the crisis rocking the duo of People Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC). He hinted that most of the aggrieved members of both parties are already aligning with his party.

Agunloye who spoke to newsmen at the national secretariat of SDP in Abuja Wednesday said that the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo state is about personality of the candidates and not the party. He promised that when given opportunity to govern Ondo state, payment of salaries and pension will be a first line charge in accordance with Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) demand.

The APC have not been able to produce governorship candidates due to various crisis threatening both party, while the PDP is locked in the battle of factions.

He alleged that Olusegun Mimiko’s administration squandered N38 billion cash inherited and now indebted to over N125 billion.

“We have found out the depth of poverty in the state. The level of degradation, alienation and people almost accepting poverty as living standard is very painful because over the seven years we have an administration who inherited N38 billion cash but now indebted to over N125 billion, so we can say that this is a state where we have expended over a trillion Naira and yet people are wallowing in abject poverty.

“This is also painful because the system in the state are still there, the mineral resources are there, the human resources are there and the things have not been well taken care of.

“In Ondo state now we have a government which cannot pay salaries for nine months, not paying pension and contractors, now people are adjusting and the same government is coming out to give them one ‘congo’ of rice or Gari without giving them water to drink.”

While sounding a note of warning to the APC led federal government to stay clear of the forthcoming poll, Agunloye said: “By now people ought to have learnt their lesson that this is Ondo state, you don’t mess around with Ondo state and I don’t think anybody will do that because the consequences of that is very large.

“I also need to serve this to people, it is not a warning but a point of observation; Ondo state is the natural hub of South-west and being the hub for the region if things go right in Ondo state it will go right in South-west. People are not waiting to be messed around and they should better understand that.”

Also speaking, national deputy chairman of SDP Ahmed Isiaq, said up till now SDP is the only party that has been able to choose a credible candidate to fly the flag of the party.

He also revealed that most of the aggrieved members of the PDP and the APC are already in torch with the SDP in the state.
