In a dramatic comeback on Wednesday night, Spanish giants Barcelona walloped their Champions League last-16 opponent, Paris Saint-Germain 6-1 to become the first side in the history of the competition to overturn a four-goal deficit in the knockout stage.
The Spanish champions were 5-3 down on aggregate in the 88th minute, but secured 3 goals in seven minutes – Neymar’s free-kick and penalty followed by Sergi Roberto’s winner – to reach quarter-finals for the 10th successive season.
Luis Suarez’s 3rd-minute header and Layvin Kurzawa’s own goal put the hosts ahead in the first half, before Lionel Messi converted a spot kick four minutes into the second half to make it 4-3 on aggregate.
Edinson Cavani got the fans at Nou Camp silent for a while when he lashed home for PSG on 61 minutes as the tie looked to be over for Barcelona.
Neymar then curled a sumptuous free-kick into the top corner before Suarez won a penalty and gave it to the Brazilian winger to convert, before Substitute Roberto then netted the winning goal of one of the greatest Champions League ties of all time.
“Barca absolutely suffocated PSG – for the first 60 minutes it was non-stop for the PSG players. It was incredible,” said former Liverpool star, Steven Gerrard, in commentaries after the game.
“They had a breather with the Edinson Cavani goal but in the end it was on again.”
Barca President, Josep Maria Bartomeu, via the officialTwitter handle of the club said: “This is a historic achievement that will be remembered forever.”
“This will give us more energy in the Champions League,” he added.
Ultimately, this season’s Champions League has been thrilling with a lot of goals – the very reason we love football. Barcelona have just destroyed PSG with a 6-5 scoreline, Bayern did 10-2 against Arsenal and we look forward to the second leg of a 5-3 Manchester City match against French side AS Monaco next week at the Stade Loius II.
